Consider knee replacement when knee pain severely limits walking, climbing stairs, or getting up from a chair; when the knee is visibly deformed or bowed; when pain disturbs sleep; and when treatments like physiotherapy, weight loss, injections, and medications have failed. X-rays showing bone-on-bone contact are a strong indicator.
Total knee replacement replaces all three compartments of the knee joint. Partial (unicondylar) knee replacement replaces only the damaged compartment, preserving the healthy portions. Partial replacement has a faster recovery and feels more natural but requires the other compartments to be intact. Only 20-30% of patients qualify for partial replacement.
Bilateral (simultaneous) knee replacement is possible and reduces total hospital time and rehabilitation duration. However, it is recommended only for patients who are medically fit enough to handle the procedure. Dr. Kirthi evaluates each patient individually to determine if simultaneous or staged replacement is the safer option.
With robotic-assisted knee replacement and modern pain management protocols, most patients begin walking with a walker within 24-48 hours of surgery. By 2-3 weeks, most patients can walk without a walker indoors. Stair climbing typically begins at 2-3 weeks, and by 6-8 weeks most daily activities are possible.
Most patients experience significant pain reduction within the first 2-3 weeks. Mild swelling and soreness can persist for 2-3 months, which is normal as the body heals. Complete pain relief and full recovery is typically achieved by 3-6 months. Robotic-assisted surgery tends to result in less post-operative pain compared to conventional techniques.
This depends on the type of implant used and individual recovery. High-flex implants designed for Indian patients allow more knee bending. Most patients can climb stairs independently by 4-6 weeks. Sitting cross-legged is possible for some patients over time but is not guaranteed. This is discussed in detail during consultation.
